HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

4TH OF JULY 2012

TOPIC LOCATION: KITCHEN CLASSICS

Going to my brother’s and sister-in-laws for a traditional 4TH of July picnic.

So I will not post a recipe today since I am giving myself the day off from cooking!

Hope that you will enjoy some pictures that Joe took on our recent trip to Europe.   All of these photos were taken in Leuven, Belgium, a city about 25 K from Brussels, Belgium.  We had a long layover in Brussels and chose to overnight in Leuven; then fly to Prague, Czech Republic the next day.

We loved Leuven; would have loved to stay longer!  It is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium dating from 891 AD with a magnificent Gothic, Gothic, Gothic Town Hall!  Surely there was not another inch of space to add another architectural ornamentation, or the building might have collapsed.

LOWER CARBOHYDRATE RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

Table of Contents: Lower Carbohydrate Recipes

RECIPES WILL BE DENOTED by:  *Low Carb

Recently I have had a request, well actually it sounded more like a plea for help, for some suggestions of recipes that are lower in carbohydrates.   Please, please, please keep in mind that I am NOT a dietitian, NOT a nutritionist, NOT a home economist.

I am just a wife, a mother, a sister, and a grandmother that enjoys cooking and conjuring-up new and hopefully good recipes.  And then, only when I’m in the mood; otherwise, we’ll be going out for dinner!

The gentleman asking for suggestions is participating in Alabama’s newest weight loss program called “Scale Back Alabama”.  He said that he had 10 weeks to go to loose his desired weight and had run out of ideas. Could I please help?

You may have to add and subtract ingredients from these recipes to suit the particular diet that you are following.   But, if you have carefully studied your diet literature, you will be able to adapt these recipes both successfully and deliciously.

THE GREAT BUTTER WARS or “HERE’S TO BACON GREASE!”

Our oldest son is a physician and, judging from what he had to spend for his medical education, somewhat of an expert in the field.  Therefore, I urge you to follow your expert doctor’s advice, not mine.  My son, loves to tease me about being “a MOD”, mother of a doctor.  He claims that I give advice freely which, of course, I do.  You can’t possibly have raised three children, cared for 13 newborn babies for a couple of months each until they were place for adoption, and not learned a thing or two!  Such as that kisses and hugs begin the healing for many cuts and scrapes long before the Neosporin is applied.

Now, I love to “talk about recipes” with anyone remotely interested, but I have been given some mighty lectures about  “using butter when margarine is better for you” or “using margarine when butter is better for you”, ad nauseaum …..
