HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

4TH OF JULY 2012

TOPIC LOCATION: KITCHEN CLASSICS

Going to my brother’s and sister-in-laws for a traditional 4TH of July picnic.

So I will not post a recipe today since I am giving myself the day off from cooking!

Hope that you will enjoy some pictures that Joe took on our recent trip to Europe.   All of these photos were taken in Leuven, Belgium, a city about 25 K from Brussels, Belgium.  We had a long layover in Brussels and chose to overnight in Leuven; then fly to Prague, Czech Republic the next day.

We loved Leuven; would have loved to stay longer!  It is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium dating from 891 AD with a magnificent Gothic, Gothic, Gothic Town Hall!  Surely there was not another inch of space to add another architectural ornamentation, or the building might have collapsed.

This is one of the major churches on the town square with gold on the clock and a gold statue ringing a gold bell.

The wooden pulpit is so beautifully carved and massive

Our pension was just off the town square and small, but beautiful inside.  I am overlooking the spiral stairway to our room.

The elegant newel post statue on the stairway celebrates one of the city’s early and continuing industries, the brewing of beer.  The famous Belgium beer, Stella Artois, is brewed in Leuven.  Belgium has at least 399 other brands of beer brewed in their country!

The foyer chandelier and ceiling decoration at the pension

Leuven is the home of Katholieke Universiteit, the oldest Catholic university still existing, dating from 1425 AD.   During WWI the wonderful library was deliberately bombed destroying countless irreplaceable volumes of books.  After that war, the library was rebuilt partly with charitabital  funds from The United States of America.

The good old USA often comes to the rescue.  Long live our grand country!!!!!

Let me hear your sentiments today or any day.
